Why Families Choose Gold Coast for Their Ocean Memorial
At Gold Coast Yacht Charters, our crew makes all the difference. From your first call to the final farewell on the water, our team guides your family with genuine compassion and respect. Every ceremony is completely private — your family only, aboard our vessel, with no shared guests or strangers present.
We depart from San Diego Bay 7 days a week, traveling a minimum of 3 nautical miles offshore in full compliance with U.S. EPA regulations. San Diego's calm harbor waters, mild year-round weather, and stunning Pacific coastline make it one of the most beautiful settings in the country for a meaningful farewell at sea.
Whether you are scattering cremated remains, committing a biodegradable urn to the ocean, or simply holding a private memorial on the water, our crew will ensure the experience is handled with the utmost dignity and care.
What to Expect During Your Ceremony
Your ceremony begins at our departure point on San Diego Bay, where our crew will greet your family and walk you through the service. Once aboard, we cruise out to the open Pacific Ocean, a minimum of 3 nautical miles from shore as required by EPA guidelines.
Once at sea, the ceremony is yours to lead. Families may include readings, music, moments of silence, flower petals, or personal tributes. Our crew is present throughout to assist and ensure everything runs smoothly, while giving your family the space and privacy to grieve and celebrate freely.
After the ceremony, we return to San Diego Bay. The full experience typically takes between 2 and 3.5 hours.
California Ash Scattering Legal Requirements
In California, ash scattering at sea is legal and regulated under both state and federal guidelines. Cremated remains may be scattered at least 500 yards from shore, outside of enclosed bays and harbors. For scatterings that take place 3 or more nautical miles offshore, the EPA requires that the event be reported within 30 days of the ceremony.
Gold Coast Yacht Charters operates in full compliance with all applicable U.S. EPA and U.S. Coast Guard regulations. Our USCG-licensed captain handles all navigation requirements, and we can provide guidance on the documentation your family will need prior to the ceremony, including the Permit for Disposition of Human Remains issued by the county.
